DALLAS - Casey Freitas, from California, found the miracle she wanted for her son at Medical City Children's Hospital in Dallas.
"He has a window of opportunity that's completely opened to him from this surgery," she said.
Her son, 14-month-old Mason Fluty, has a website and Facebook page chronicling his journey. He was born with fused fingers and toes, a symptom of Apert syndrome.
"It was devastating and discouraging after having several doctors tell me that he was only going to have two or three fingers, or just mitten hands," Freitas said.
But his mother would not give up.
Second, third and fourth opinions later, it was mother message boards that led her to Dallas.
"I wasn't gonna take 'no,'" Freitas said. "Somebody said Dr. Fearon will give him 10 fingers and toes."
After major fundraising, and a substantial discount by Medical City, two surgeries later, it happened.
"He has 10 fingers and toes, and when he gets home, he'll be able to feel the sand between his toes," said nurse practitioner Jennifer Kaplan.
Two-month-old sister Marley and a family friend offered support. Two big brothers are waiting back in Northern California for Mason to come home. When their brothers' blue bandages come off in three weeks, it will reveal the miracle.
"We can't even begin to express how grateful we are in the feeling, just knowing that there's 10 fingers in those casts right now," Freitas said.
The family has raised more than $50,000, and still needs about $20,000 more to cover costs.
